Helping an Aging Parent With Their Insurance

Many of the calls we get start with, "I'm calling about my mom." Adult children often step in to help a parent with insurance, and it is one of the kindest things you can do. Here is a gentle, practical way to get started.
Start with a relaxed conversation
Pick a calm moment, maybe over lunch, and let your parent know you would like to help. Keep the focus on making life easier for them. Most parents appreciate the offer, especially when they feel included in every decision.
Get permission in writing
Privacy rules mean insurance companies and Medicare usually cannot talk with you about your parent's coverage until your parent gives written permission. Each company has its own form, and Medicare has one as well. Getting these signed early saves a lot of frustration later. For broader decisions, such as a power of attorney, it is wise to talk with an attorney.
Make a one-page information sheet
A single page with the essentials is a lifesaver in a busy doctor's office or an emergency. Include:
Full name, date of birth and insurance member numbers
Names and phone numbers of their doctors and pharmacy
A current list of medications with dosages
Allergies and major health conditions
Their insurance agent's contact information
Where the original cards and paperwork are kept
Keep one copy with your parent, one with you, and update it whenever something changes.
Keep the paperwork together
Set up one folder for insurance mail and help your parent drop letters into it as they arrive. Every month or two, sit down together and look through it. Our article on decoding insurance mail can help you sort the pile.
Be a second set of eyes
With your parent's OK, join their yearly review with us, in person or by phone. You may notice things they forget to mention, like a new specialist or a medication that got expensive. Your parent still makes the decisions. You are simply there for support.
Help them stay safe
Older adults are frequent targets for phone and mail scams. Remind your parent never to give out their Medicare or Social Security number to someone who calls unexpectedly. Ask them to call you or us first whenever something feels off.
